The project builds on two previous initiatives in the northern and southern West Bank. The northern West Bank project was a collaboration between the World Bank, European Commission and the government of Italy. It involved the development of solid waste management systems in 80 communities in the Jenin Governate. The project in southern West Bank targets the Bethlehem and Hebron governates. Like the northern West Bank project, it involves the construction of a sanitary landfill and the closure and rehabilitation of existing dump sites. The project is scheduled for pre-appraisal on Sept. 26, 2011 with the estimated project budget increased to $10 million.
